Qi means life force and gong means practice . As Qigong practitioners explain there is chi pr energy in the air we breathe, in our environment and our food. By practicing a combination of movements and breath regulation the qi of the body is encouraged to flow smoothly. The idea behind this is that since energy flows throughout the body if there is a blockage then there could be a problem in the future. So by practicing techniques to help the energy flow through the meridians properly you become healthier and longer lived.
Adept Qigong practitioners can absorb enough energy from the air to project it to others to help the healing process or to unblock energies with the chi they can project from their hands.
Over 80 million people practice some form of Qigong in China. It has been carefully researched and is being incorporated into their social health care system to make it cheaper and their citizens healthier.
Qigong is not a religion and requires no system of beliefs to make it work for you. (see a more recent post on this topic here).
